There is a growing tendency these years that more and more people have become interested in bicycle-sharing services and this has aroused a heated debate among people as to whether it is good for the society or not. Some people support it as good while some others claim it is bad to us. As a proverb goes: ‘Every coin has its two sides.’ The case is no exception. But as far as I’m concerned, I’m in favor of the former opinion.

People who are for it hold the following reasons. In the first place, the bicycle-sharing services are very convenient. It easy to find one to ride on anywhere and thus it covers much more area than traditional transportation. It will be the best choice when we can’t find any bus, taxi or subway. Secondly, the services can release the pressure of traffic considerably. In downtown, cycling is much quicker than driving. Therefore, people prefer to go out by bike in downtown. By doing so, there will be fewer cars on the road.

But people who take an opposite side also have strong reasons. Firstly, the ‘sharing-bike parking problem’ has been brought to public attention. The increasing number of the bicycles have made a disorderly parking order. Secondly, the safety problems are concerned. The renting progresses are not perfect. The bikes can be used by under-14s who are not allowed to ride bikes on the road. Apart from that, some people ride them in dangerous ways and often cause accidents. And who was responsible for the accidents? It’s hard to say. Last but not least, it’s easy to recharge but difficult to refund. It damages consumers’ economic rights and interests.

Like anything else the bicycle-sharing services has its merits and demerits. It’s an emerging industry and there is still a long way to go before it can be perfected. I believe that the advantages of bicycle-sharing will gradually emerge under the government’s impetus and supervision.
